City of Casper asks residents to maintain vegetation to reduce wildland fire fuel

CASPER, Wyo. — The City of Casper is reminding all property owners, occupants, and management companies about the importance of maintaining grass, weeds, and vegetation through Casper’s growing season, as warmer weather approaches.

“Properly maintaining vegetation not only supports neighborhood pride and curb appeal, but it is also one of the most effective ways to reduce fire hazards,” stated Code Enforcement Supervisor Amber Jividen.

According to Jividen, Casper Municipal Code Section 8.44.010 requires all owners or occupants to keep their lots, adjoining parkways, alleyways, and sidewalks free from weeds, grass, dandelions, or over vegetation exceeding eight inches in height. Overgrown vegetation can create health, safety, and fire hazards and may be detrimental to the surrounding neighborhood, a release from the City of Casper states.

The release states that this year, Casper and Natrona County are entering the growing season under dry winter and spring conditions, which have contributed to the elevated fire danger across Wyoming.

Local authorities have already enacted Stage 1 fire restrictions, encouraging residents to limit their outdoor ignition sources in order to prevent wildland fires from breaking out..

“Recent fire activity near Casper further underscores the heightened risk posed by dry grass and unmanaged weeds, with Red Flag Warnings highlighting extreme fire conditions in the region,” Jividen said. “Keeping weeds and grass trimmed below eight inches is an important and effective way for residents to reduce fuel loads around homes, alleyways, and rights-of-way.”

The release notes that drought-stressed weeds and grass can ignite more easily and they can accelerate fire spread, particularly during hot, windy periods.

All residents are encouraged to:

  • · Regularly mow weeds and grass to keep vegetation below eight inches.
  • Remove vegetation in alleys, parkways, and sidewalk area adjacent to their property.
  • Stay aware of drought conditions, fire restrictions, and Red Flag Warnings.
  • Contact Code Enforcement (235.8254) for guidance and support before an issue is dire.
