The fundraiser is one of the organization’s most critical events, especially leading into the cold winter months.
FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – The soup was flowing tonight at the Dakota Medical Foundation, with community chefs contributing unique recipes for a great cause.
It was the annual Gourmet Soup Kitchen event put on by Churches United.
The Moorhead-based nonprofit is in a much better financial state than they were in 2024, but they still can use all the help they can get going into the colder months, as demand is already increasing.
With the potential freeze to SNAP benefits and other food assistance programs beginning in November, many families in need are trying to stockpile as much as they can.
“Yesterday alone, during our distribution at the food pantry, we had 151 households,” said Pastor Devlyn Brooks, CEO of Churches United. “That’s 25 to 30 more than usual.”
11 different chefs set up tables with their soups, with guests getting to vote for their favorite.
“The winner gets bragging rights and a very cool trophy,” said development director Stephanie Ressler. “All the funds raised go right back into Churches United. Right now, food scarcity is real, and that’s what we’re focusing on tonight.”
Tickets were $65, and there were also silent auction and raffle items to try and raise even more money for the organization.
