Bowling Green senior golfer Caroline Childers couldn’t help but get emotional as she stepped on the green for her final hole in Wednesday’s final round of the KHSAA state girls’ golf tournament at Bowling Green Country Club.
Childers finished her round with a 5-over par 77, improving by one shot over day one and finishing tied for 16th with a two-day score of 155. It was the best score by a local golfer, the second straight year Childers has accomplished that feat. She finished tied for 10th last year.
Childers admitted she was very emotional on the green on her final hole, thinking about a career that included back-to-back individual region titles.
“I just looked down 1 and I remembered everything,” Childers said. “I’ve been on the team since I was in sixth grade. It was just a lot. We’ve had a great team the past seven years. I remember trying out in sixth grade. It’s just a lot of memories. My dad is my coach and I kind of grew up on this team, on this course. It’s a good way to end here.”
Childers started the day 4-over through the first four holes before settling in and going 1-over the rest of the way.
“I kind of had a rough start today and then I was like, ‘I’m going to grind it out, do what I can and leave it all out there one last time,’ ” Childers said.
Her score led the way for a Bowling Green team that finished sixth overall with a combined 330, dropping a spot after being tied for fifth after the first day.
“We’ve had a great season,” BG coach Logan Steenbergen said. “I’m so proud of them. My first year of coaching we qualified as a team and came in ninth as a team and we were thrilled with that. To be a little disappointed in sixth, what a blessing that is. The girls came out and gave it their all.”
Mary Douglas Childers (172) finished second among Bowling Green golfers. Elle Morgan carded a two-day score of 176, while Saanvi Aravantagi finished with a 178.
With Caroline Childers the only senior on the team, Steenburgen said this run to the state championship has been a valuable experience for her young team.
“Bowling Green has got a bright future in girls’ golf,” Steenbergen said. “We are really excited about that, but we will definitely miss Caroline. She got to walk with her dad today and at region. She’s worked so hard. It’s been cool to see her grow and mature the past three years.”
Childers said she is excited to see what this team can do in the future.
“My sister and her best friend are on this team,” Childers said. “I love them all. I hope they can come back next year and the next year. Just keep getting better and remember how fun it is and to soak it all in because it all goes by so fast.”
Among the other local golfers who competed, Barren County’s Chloe Witcher tied for 28th with a two-day score of 158. South Warren’s Stella Fortney finished with a two-day score of 165, while Barren County’s Barren County’s Lucy Zalla carded a 173.
Sacred Heart’s Keira Yun was the individual champion with a 6-under 138, four shots better than Marshall County’s Trinity Beth.
Madison Central finished with a 604 to take the team title by 11 shots over Lexington Christian.
