Chicago police shoot and kill person in Humboldt Park

Chicago police shot and killed a person in Humboldt Park Monday while trying to pull over a vehicle wanted in a separate shooting investigation, police said.

Around 5:40 p.m., officers tried to stop a vehicle that was suspected of being involved in a reported shooting that occurred earlier Monday, according to Chicago police. The driver tried to flee and officers followed the vehicle in the 800 block of North Homan Avenue. As the person tried to flee, the car struck a pedestrian, an unmarked squad car and a CTA bus multiple times, police said.

As Chicago police officers tried to stop the vehicle to arrest the person, one of the officers fired shots, striking the person, police said.

Officers provided first aid to the person who was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body, police said. The person’s gender, age and identity were not known as of late Monday.

Two officers were treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries. The pedestrian hit by the car was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was listed in good condition.

Police say they recovered a gun from the car.

The shooting is under investigation by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which didn’t respond to requests for comment Monday.
