KAHALA, Oahu (KHON2) — Famed Hawaii chef Alan Wong is opening another restaurant and making his grand return to the Hawaiian Islands after five years.
Wong’s restaurant on South King Street closed five years ago during the pandemic. His popular Hawaii regional cuisine attracted many big-names, including former president Barack Obama.
Now Chef Wong will open a new restaurant at the Kahala Hotel.

“It’s been five years since (Chef Wong) had a presence here in Hawaii,” said The Kahala Hotel General Manager Joe Ibarra. “We want to recreate that and bring back the King Street classics here to the hotel. So you can expect the signature items that people love and crave to be on the menu when we open.”
Alan Wong’s will take over Hoku’s, which will close after 30 years.
“We consider it to be a natural evolution of where we need to go,” said Ibarra on the decision to close Hoku’s. “We want to bring back the fine dining and we want to bring back the fine dining of Alan Wong’s here back to The Kahala.”
The new restaurant is slated to open early next year.
