Actor and comedian George Wendt, best known for his role as Norm Peterson on the iconic sitcom “Cheers,” has died at age 76. While fans across the country remember him for his classic one-liners, Arkansans may also recall him as part of one of the state’s quirkiest traditions.
Wendt holds a special place in Hot Springs history as the first-ever Celebrity Grand Marshal of the World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade. He made his parade debut in 2005—the second year of the event—since there was no celebrity grand marshal for the inaugural run.
With his charm and legendary TV presence, Wendt helped put the now-famous 98-foot-long parade on the national map. His appearance kicked off a tradition of bringing big-name personalities to the annual celebration. Celebrities who held the title in the following years include Pauly Shore, Mario Lopez, Kevin Bacon, Ralph Maccio and many more.
As Hot Springs continues to embrace its parade with pride each March, Wendt’s early involvement remains a beloved chapter in the event’s growing legacy.
