CLOVIS, N.M. – Charges against Alek Collins in a 2024 kidnapping case were dismissed after a federal judge granted a motion following civil commitment.
Investigators said Collins shot and killed two women at a park in Clovis in May 2024 and took one victim’s 10-month-old baby across state lines to Abilene, Texas.
Police said Collins carjacked an Uber driver in Abilene before officers arrested him. Police found the baby safe.
According to court documents, a federal judge granted a motion to dismiss the indictment following civil commitment.
KOB 4 reached out to the U.S. attorney’s office to confirm whether that means Collins was found incompetent to stand trial and will go to a mental health treatment facility. As of 10 p.m. on Monday night we have not heard back.
