CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – You will soon see a hike in your cell phone bill, as the West Virginia Public Service Commission announced on Thursday that cell phone bills will go up 10.2 percent on July 1.

The fee was put into place by the West Virginia Legislature and it is subject to recalculation — or additions increases — every two years.

A PSC press release said the wireless enhanced 911 fee (WE911 fee) is going from $3.64 to $4.01. There will also be an 8-cent wireless tower fee and a 29-cent public safety wireless fee, which will increase the final bill per customer per month another $4.38.

According to the press release, the money is collected by the PSC, but is then remitted to the counties based on a formula for their use. The press statement said fees are used to improve the effectiveness and reliability of 911 services.
