Cardinal Girls Streak at Twelve After Road Win at Thompson

THOMPSON (NewsDakota)- Two of the top-five teams in this week’s NDAPSSA Class A poll met on Thursday night in Thompson, and if this is what the postseason could be like, Cardinal fans will need to travel with their ventilators.

After scoring the first eleven points of the game, the fourth-ranked Carrington Cardinals held on to defeat the second-ranked Thompson Tommies 54-50 on Thursday night to extend their winning streak to twelve and move closer to the number one seed in the Region 2 Tournament.

The Cardinals started on fire from beyond the arc as triples by Sienna Topp, Aniston Hoornaert and Harper Kollman gave Carrington (14-3, 11-1 Region 2A) an 11-0 lead four minutes into the game.  Jena Schwabe scored a layup and Kya Hurst hit a three to cut the deficit to six after the first.

Carrington’s defense continued to stymie the Tommies in the second quarter as the lead expanded to 24-11, but Addy Sage buried a three at the horn to cut the lead to eight at the half.  And Thompson (15-3, 11-2 Region 2A) would cut the lead to three but sophomore Maara Kutz scored nine of Carrington’s eleven points in the third and the Cardinals held onto the lead by eight through three.

The fourth quarter was an offensive clinic with Sage scoring ten of her game-high sixteen, but with the lead down to 49-47, it was Kollman who hit a left-wing three to settle it once and for all.  Hoornaert’s free throw with under five seconds left sealed the win.

The Cardinals are back on the road Saturday at the Central Cass Squirrels with coverage on Thunder Country 98.3 beginning at around 2:15pm.
