INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indiana Gov. Mike Braun used his Labor Day message to recognize Hoosier workers while highlighting the state’s low unemployment, growing workforce and continued business investment.
In a letter released on Monday, Braun said Indiana’s workforce is a major reason companies are choosing to expand or establish operations in the state.
“Our state’s greatest asset is you,” Braun said, referring to Indiana workers.
According to figures cited by Braun from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Indiana’s unemployment rate stands at 3.3%, below the national rate of 4.1%. The governor also pointed to Indiana’s 63.1% labor force participation rate, which he said is higher than the national rate of 61.4%.
Braun also highlighted Indiana’s 1.7% veteran unemployment rate and said the number of registered apprentices in the state has reached an all-time high.
The governor credited Hoosiers’ willingness to work with helping Indiana attract companies and investment.
“Hoosiers aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves,” Braun said.
Braun pointed to several major corporate investments as examples of Indiana’s economic momentum.
Rolls-Royce recently completed a $1 billion investment in its Indiana manufacturing operations, including upgrades to facilities in Indianapolis and expanded capabilities to support defense-related engine programs.
Caterpillar also is investing heavily in Indiana, including an expansion in Lafayette and $5 million dedicated to training and upskilling workers.
Braun also highlighted Do it Best’s decision to bring True Value’s headquarters to Fort Wayne and Hyster-Yale’s plans to move 350 jobs from Illinois to Avon.
The governor said those investments will provide new opportunities for workers and contribute to the economic well-being of Indiana families.
“Companies from around the world are choosing Indiana, and businesses already here are doubling down because they know the value of our workforce,” Braun said.
Braun also used the Labor Day message to discuss workplace policies his administration has pursued for state employees.
He pointed to an expansion of paid family leave, a Family First Workplace pilot program that allows new parents to bring their babies to work and special paid leave for state employees whose homes were damaged by severe storms.
Braun said those policies are part of his effort to create a state government workplace where employees can succeed both professionally and at home.
While the governor credited state policies with helping create conditions for economic growth, he said Indiana workers remain the driving force behind the state’s economy.
“Our policies can create the conditions for growth, but it’s your skill, work ethic and experience that power Indiana’s economy,” Braun said.
As Indiana continues to compete for new businesses and investment, Braun said his administration will focus on ensuring economic growth translates into higher wages, better jobs and more opportunities for Hoosier families.
He closed his Labor Day message by thanking Indiana workers and wishing Hoosiers a safe holiday weekend.
