A shooting on Bertrand Drive on Monday night has left several business owners and customers shaken.
At the SAS Shoes store in the same shopping center where the shooting occurred, manager Debra Jules spent part of her Tuesday afternoon sweeping up shattered glass after bullets tore through the store’s front entrance.
“It doesn’t feel safe honestly, and it’s scary,” Jules said. “Thankfully we weren’t here because we have bullet fragments all over the store. Anyone could have gotten injured.”
The Lafayette Police Department responded to reports of a shooting in the 500 block of Bertrand Drive around 7:22 p.m. Monday. Officers found one individual suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and he was transported to a local hospital. Investigators say the shooting stemmed from an altercation that escalated into gunfire.
Some bystanders commented on social media that they heard at least 20 gunshots. Others said it sounded like a war zone.
Inside SAS Shoes, the amount of damage in the store shows how intense the shooting was. The glass door at the front of the business was completely shattered.
Bullet holes were found in the upper windows, shell casings scattered across the floor, and additional casings discovered nearly 10 feet into the back of the store.
Jules says the store had closed shortly before the shooting occurred.
“My sales associate got off at 6:30, and everything was fine,” she said. “Then at 9:38 p.m., I got a call saying the door was shattered.”
Living just minutes away, Jules rushed to the store and stayed there for hours while the damage was assessed and the building secured. Now, the store remains closed as repairs continue.
“It really affects us because it brings a sense of fear,” Jules said. “We’re right across from the Cajun Dome where a lot of good things happen. You don’t expect something like this.”
Other businesses were also impacted. Republic Finance reported broken windows but remains open.
Although his restaurant was not directly hit, Agave manager Foster Patout says the incident has changed how he views safety and preparedness.
“My first reaction was shock,” Patout said. “But it also puts things in perspective. You have to be prepared for everything.”
Patout says several customers were dining inside Agave when the shooting occurred.
“There were four or five people at the bar and some in the restaurant,” he said. “Everyone had to hide inside. It’s not a good feeling to know people were here and fearful for their lives.”
After nine years in the area without an incident like this, Patout says the shooting served as a wake-up call for him.
Three individuals, Travarious Vincent, Mason Williams, and Tylus Broussard, have been arrested in connection with the shooting. While arrests have been made, police say the investigation remains ongoing.
