Beach hazards statement issued for Northern Michigan for Saturday and Sunday

At 2:31 p.m. EDT on Friday, the National Weather Service released a beach hazards statement valid from Saturday 8 a.m. EDT until Sunday 8 p.m. EDT for Leelanau, Benzie, Manistee, Mackinac and Charlevoix counties.

“Dangerous swimming conditions are expected due to high waves of 3 to 6 feet and rip currents,” states the weather service. “Regardless of swim risk, hypothermia is possible due to very cold water temperatures.”

“Strong currents can pull swimmers into deeper water and high waves can sweep people off piers,” explains the weather service. “Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions.”

Advance Local Weather Alerts is a service provided by United Robots, which uses machine learning to compile the latest data from the National Weather Service.
