Baylor University football player killed in shooting: reports

Freshman Baylor University football player Alex Foster was fatally shot Tuesday night in his hometown of Greenville, Miss., according to multiple reports.

Foster, 18, was pronounced dead Wednesday morning, according to Waco, Texas, CBS affiliate KWTX. The exact circumstances of the shooting were not immediately made clear.

The university confirmed Foster’s passing but did not address his cause of death, only calling it “unexpected.”

“We are heartbroken by the unexpected passing of Alex Foster, a beloved teammate, friend and a cherished part of the Baylor family,” head coach Dave Aranda and athletic director Mack Rhoades said in a joint statement. “In this time of deep sorrow, we draw strength from our faith and the unwavering love of the Baylor community.”

Police did not publicly confirm the details of Foster’s death either. Local outlet The Delta News and unaffiliated reporter Blake Levine both said he was killed in a shooting.

Foster enrolled at Baylor in 2024 after committing to the football team as a defensive lineman, but did not play in his first year on campus. Taking an initial year to build strength and conditioning, known as a redshirt year, is common among offensive and defensive linemen. Foster was expected to see playing time during the upcoming 2025 season.

Foster was a high school standout at St. Joseph Catholic in Greenville, and was wanted by several major schools, including Arkansas, Kentucky and Georgia Tech.

Just two days before Foster’s death, another teenager was fatally shot in Greenville over Memorial Day weekend. The victim was identified as 16-year-old high school student Cody Boettcher.
