Barre’s public conduct ordinance has one more round of voting before passing

BARRE, Vt. (WCAX) – Barre is one step closer to implementing a new ordinance to keep you safer.

The city’s new public conduct ordinance passed 4 to 3 and has one more round of voting to go.

It will help police establish what’s considered acceptable behavior in public spaces.

Police tell us they run into people behaving in an intimidating or threatening way on a regular basis.

As officials get closer to the next vote, we’ve learned they plan to enforce the ordinance through trespass orders.

“If the offences continue to be committed, you get to a no trespass order, which then becomes enforceable through a court action as well. Instead of having a revolving door of these issues, or just having to respond to the same issue over and over and over again, this gets to an actual consequence,” said Barre Town Manager Nicolas Storellicastro.

The next vote will be on June 16th at the Barre City Hall.
