The Backstreet Boys made waves on Sunday with a viral Super Bowl commercial for Coinbase and now they’re aiming to be the next Super Bowl halftime performers.
The boy band popped up during the big game in an ad for the cryptocurrency platform that featured a karaoke-style sing-along of their hit track “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back).”
After the commercial created buzz online, the group responded by throwing their hat in the ring for next year’s halftime stage.
“What do you guys think about Backstreet Boys performing at the 2027 Super Bowl Halftime Show?” AJ McLean asked the audience during one of their recent Las Vegas residency shows. “Let’s make it happen! I mean, why not? It’s in Los Angeles — it’s right down the street.”
Though the band is excited about the idea of a nostalgia-filled set at next year’s game, they weren’t always on board with the idea. Nick Carter previously shared that the group actually turned down the chance to headline the 2001 Super Bowl and chose to perform the national anthem instead.
“At the time, we loved the Whitney Houston rendition of the national anthem. And for us, we got the choice and we passed on the halftime,” Carter told Entertainment Tonight in 2021. “But it was a memorable experience for everyone … and I like to say we did a really good job at the national anthem.”
Carter also complimented fellow boy band NSYNC, who headlined the halftime show in 2001, for doing “a great job,” noting he’d love to share the Super Bowl stage with them someday.
“That again is going back to the era we came from, the late ‘90s,” he explained. “It was a really beautiful time and I think everybody wants that again.”
