AUSTIN (KXAN) – Austin FC had already made history in reaching this moment. With time ticking down ahead of seemingly inevitable penalty kicks, the Verde and Black had a moment that will go down in the history of the franchise.

In the U.S. Open Cup Semifinals on the road against Minnesota United, Austin FC found themselves deadlocked at one with seconds remaining. An unlikely hero in CJ Fodrey emerged.

The 21-year-old finished off a goal with ten seconds left before the match would head to penalty kicks. Well-warranted mayhem ensued as Austin clinched a spot in the U.S. Open Cup Finals.

“I blacked out, I’ll be honest with you,” said Fodrey. “I don’t even remember all of it to be honest. Looking at the traveling fans, it was amazing. I think that’s when I kind of got the consciousness back.”

Austin got on the scoresheet first with a goal from Osman Bukari in first half stoppage time. That 1-0 lead stayed until the 67th minute when Joaquín Pereyra evened things up for the host side.

The intensity level certainly went up a couple notches throughout the rest of the second half but the match stayed even deep into extra time.

The game-winner eventually coming in the 120th minute came after constant pressure from Austin FC as the visitors took down Minnesota by a final score of 2-1.

The Verde and Black will now host the U.S. Open Cup Final October 1 against Nashville at Q2 Stadium.
