Early Monday morning, Portland finally dipped down to freezing, but only for “one little short blip,” according to Rebecca Muessle, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Portland.
“Based off of our airport observations, we did get down to 30 degrees,” Muessle said.
At 2:25 a.m., she said, the Portland International Airport registered 32 degrees. About an hour later, the temperature was back up above freezing.
It is the first time this season that the airport has recorded a temperature of 32 degrees or below.
Portland had a warmer-than-average November. Last week, Tom Schuldt, also a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Portland, told The Oregonian/OregonLive that November was trending two to three degrees warmer than average.
The airport usually gets to freezing at least once by Nov. 12, Schuldt said. Last month, it did not hit 32 degrees at all.
Warm temperatures may be good for playing outside, but they don’t bode well for the snowpack in the mountains, which Schuldt noted was below normal last week.
The short freeze won’t change much down in the valley for now.
According to Muessle, temperatures aren’t expected to drop down to freezing again any time soon.
Monday should be partly sunny, with a high near 47 degrees and a small chance of rain between noon and 1 p.m.
By Tuesday, Muessle said, “We’re going to be cloudier.”
“It will definitely still be chilly,” she added, but the low is only forecast to get down to 40 degrees.
