Albuquerque Rebels Volleyball Club supports player’s leukemia battle

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Albuquerque volleyball players are inviting the public to a weekend game day to support 14-year-old Sailor as she fights leukemia.

KOB 4 shared the story of Sailor, a 14-year-old volleyball player with Albuquerque Rebels Volleyball Club. Doctors diagnosed her with leukemia in July.

Szuch said Sailor has spent months in the hospital, gone through rounds of chemo and had at least one surgery.

“She’s a special soul. You can see like everything in her so kind, and she’s a good teammate. She’s a good human,” said Senobia Szuch.

In a recent online update, Sailor wrote she hopes to “continue to feel peace and continue to be a boss babe.”

“When you read a kid saying things like ‘I’m strong and this is going to be okay and your prayers are like lifting me up’, it’s a good reminder of like the normal everyday things that we go through are nothing,” said Szuch.

The club is hosting a game day this weekend with open courts and local vendors to bring the community together for Sailor.

The club also remembers Rylee Lawson, who died eight years ago at age 11 from an asthma-induced heart attack.

“The number 14 is — honors her. So, as a club director, the last thing I want to do is lose another athlete.” said Szuch.

The event centers on supporting Sailor as she continues her treatment. For more information on how to help Sailor, click here.
