ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – An Albuquerque couple were just the latest to be taken into custody through the use of a “bait car,” according to the Albuquerque Police Department.
Police stated in court documents that 29-year-old Adrian Prevatt and 26-year-old Kaylyn Reynolds stole a car in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Lomas Boulevard NE around 4:45 a.m. on June 29.
However, that vehicle turned out to be one Albuquerque police were monitoring through audio and video recording devices.
APD alleges the pair then drove around parts of northeast Albuquerque in the bait car looking for other cars that were unlocked.
At one point, Reynolds allegedly found a truck unlocked and took backpacks that were sitting inside.
The duo could be seen on video released by APD rummaging through those backpacks and finding cash, gold, silver, and guns.
“How much is that? A thousand?” Prevatt asks Reynolds in the video from inside the bait car released by police.
“Bro, I don’t even want to look,” responds Reynolds. Prevatt then tells Reynolds, “Count it! Count it!”
The cameras inside the bait car also caught another discussion in which the pair calls people who leave their cars unlocked “dumb” while touting their own intelligence.
“I told you I smart. I smart, babe. I smart, smart huh?” said Reynolds in the video.
The video also appears to show the couple discussing what to do with the car and items they allegedly stole. Eventually, they decided to take the car to an apartment complex on Utah Street NE, planning to leave it there, according to police.
That’s where APD officers were waiting for them with police dogs and were able to take both into custody without incident.
Both are facing multiple charges including unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, burglary of a vehicle, receiving stolen property, and more.
A judge decided to release both from custody on their own recognizance on Thursday while they await their next appearances in court.
