Albuquerque first responders have strong women role models

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – On International Women’s Day, Albuquerque first responders are honoring the roles women have played from firefighting to police work.

Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) hired its first female firefighter, Joanna Sieben, in 1979, paving the way for future women in the department.

Just last September, AFR had its first woman-led crew. AFR points out that all firefighters, regardless of gender, must meet the same standards, including physical fitness tests and academy training.

The Albuquerque Police Department (APD) is also recogning the contributions of women serving the metro community.

Women hold various roles in APD, from Interim Chief of Police Cecily Barker to crime scene investigators and patrol officers.
