Albuquerque City Council rejects gross receipts tax increase

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Albuquerque City Council rejected a proposal to raise the city’s gross receipts tax by 0.4875% on Monday night.

The proposal was shot down in an 8-1 vote just after 10 p.m.

City Councilor Brook Bassan proposed and supported the tax increase. She said the funds would support projects like the Paseo and Unser Buildout and the North Domingo Baca Aquatic Center. The proposal also included a resolution to raise wages for the city’s lowest-paid workers.

The proposal set off a firestorm of public comments. Many residents were opposed to the idea of a gross receipts tax increase, though others voiced support for raising wages for city workers.

If the proposal had been approved, Albuquerque’s gross receipts tax would have risen from 7.625% to 8.113%.
