Alabama high school student runs from school after gun clip found in backpack

A Decatur High School student has been removed from campus after a gun clip was found in his backpack Monday morning.

At approximately 9:58 a.m., Decatur High School’s OpenGate weapons detection system alerted staff to a prohibited item in a student’s backpack, according to a news release.

During a secondary screening, a firearm magazine was found, but no firearm was present.

The student grabbed the backpack, knocked over part of the checkpoint, and ran away from the building, the release says.

The school was briefly placed under a secure perimeter and later moved to heightened alert while police searched for the student.

The student’s parents were contacted, and the student later returned home.

He has been removed from school pending a due process hearing for multiple violations of the code of conduct, according to the school.

Decatur City Schools stated in its release that the OpenGate system functioned as designed and thanked staff, police, and parents for their cooperation as the situation was resolved.
