One long-time meteorological organization is sharing its take on how severe thunderstorm and tornado season may shape up this year. One difference from a typical severe weather season is our worst severe storms may come earlier than normal.
Michigan has a fairly distinct severe thunderstorm season. Usually we can have a severe weather outbreak or two in March, April or May. However, the heart of Michigan’s severe weather season usually comes in June and early July. This is the time when the jetstream, the engine for severe storms, is over Michigan and southern Canada. Michigan is positioned on the warm, humid side of the jetstream in June. Thunderstorms have their most strength in June.
