Abbott activates emergency resources ahead of growing wildfire threat, flood risk in Texas

AUSTIN (KXAN) — With expected growing wildfire danger across Texas and the potential for a flood risk this weekend, Gov. Greg Abbott is activating more state emergency response resources Friday.

A press release from Abbott’s office said he amended and renewed Texas’ wildfire disaster declaration to now include 179 counties.

“Elevated wildfire conditions and flood risk continue to pose a threat across the state of Texas,” said Abbott in a statement. “Today, I directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to deploy additional resources in preparation for potential wildfires in the eastern half of the state and severe flooding in West Texas. Texas will remain vigilant and continue to provide all necessary resources to protect Texans from wildfire and flood threats.”

Wildfire threat

Texas A&M Forest Service said the expanded wildfire danger comes from dry vegetation in East Texas paired with increased winds and above-average temperatures. The Wildland Fire Preparedness Level was raised to Level 3 as a result. Texans are urged to avoid activities that create sparks, according to the governor’s press release.

The Texas A&M Forest Service is being bolstered with more than 350 state, local, and out of state firefighters and support personnel if needed, according to the press release. The service is also gaining more than 125 pieces of equipment at the ready, including fire engines, bulldozers, and motor graders.

Flood threat

The governor’s office said that the National Weather Service is expecting a risk of heavy rain from storms in the eastern Pacific moving north over Mexico and into Far West Texas. This could result in flash flooding.

“Texans are urged to monitor the forecasts carefully and follow directions from emergency officials,” the governor’s office said.

Swiftwater rescue boat squads will be ready to help with flood rescues, the press release said.

The governor’s office said Texans should be prepared by making an emergency plan and supply kit and following instructions from emergency response officials.
