5 people indicted for transporting contraband into State Pen

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Five people, including two current inmates and one former state correctional officer, have been indicted for transporting contraband into the South Dakota State Penitentiary.

In a news release and press conference Thursday morning, Attorney General Marty Jackley announced former correctional officer Carson DeYoung, 22; inmate Max Bolden, 42; inmate Simba Maat, 25; Nancy Sage, 52; and Chandler Boone, 31, of Colorado were each charged with three felonies and one misdemeanor.

For Bolden and Maat, their indicted sentences are doubled.

8% of the population, 40% of SD’s inmates

All five were indicted by a Minnehaha County Grand Jury for a felony count of conspiracy to distribute meth; a felony count to distribute K2, which is intended to mimic THC, the main ingredient of marijuana; a felony count of conspiracy to deliver a cell phone to an inmate; and a misdemeanor of conspiracy to deliver a vape pen to an inmate.

DeYoung was also charged with a felony count of possession of an anabolic steroid with intent to deliver to an inmate and a felony count of possessing a controlled substance of a steroid with intent to distribute.

According to Jackley, Boone created the items and sent them to Sage. DeYoung was planning to transport the items into the penitentiary, but had not yet done so.

“Transporting illegal items into the prison makes the facility less safe for staff and inmates,” Jackley said in a news release. “We will not tolerate such activity and thank you to the Department of Corrections for its cooperation with the investigation.”

Bolden is serving a life sentence for murder. Maat is serving sentences for First Degree Burglary and Second Degree Burglary. His scheduled release date is 2028.
