ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen said the sheriff’s office fired a deputy after his county-issued AR-15 was used in a New Year’s Day killing.
KOB 4 Investigates requested public records from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and Albuquerque Police Department about a month ago and is still waiting for them.
Allen announced the firing and said Deputy Jacob Zamora had worked at the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office for a year before the agency terminated him on April 7.
“When his firearm was stolen – he did not report his firearm to be stolen to us, or anyone at all. Until we found out from the ATF that our rifle was used in the commission of a homicide,” Allen said.
Albuquerque police said Peyton Reagan pulled the trigger and Dominic Martinez helped him kill Alexander Wilson on New Year’s Day downtown.
Police said officers heard gunshots and saw Reagan running away with a rifle. Police also said their investigation showed Reagan texted Martinez about killing three people before the shooting.
Allen said Zamora replaced the missing county rifle with his personal AR-15 so supervisors would not catch that it was gone.
What happens next?
Allen said Zamora is out of a job. He also said any criminal charge decision will be up to the Albuquerque Police Department and the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office.
4 Investigates will follow up when public records are released.
