More than 200,000 names have been removed from voter rolls in Missouri so far this year. Sec. of State Denny Hoskins said that every name removed belonged to someone who either never was or is no longer eligible to vote in Missouri.
“That includes over 18,000 deceased voters and 2,000 felons,” Hoskins told Missourinet. “This is something that I take very seriously, removing ineligible voters off the voter rolls.”
Hoskins said those removed included non U.S. citizens, “that unfortunately are registered to vote here in the state of Missouri. We’ve been working with our counterparts, whether it’s local election authorities or ICE, to make sure that they are taken off the voter rolls as well.”
He also told Missourinet that earlier this year they discovered that an illegal immigrant had cast a ballot in Missouri’s general election last November. He said that his office has been working with ICE to have that person deported.
Meanwhile, it appears that many of the names removed from the state’s voter rolls are likely of people that moved to another state and assumed their voter registration back in Missouri would automatically expire.
“However, that’s not the case,” Hoskins said. “We are working very hard in order to make sure that when people do move and they haven’t changed their voter registration, we go ahead and take those people off the voter rolls.”
Hoskins added that doing so ensures that someone who moves to and votes in another state does not then return to Missouri and votes a second time in the same election.
