INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A pair of tortoises taken from the Indianapolis Zoo several days ago have been found, although details were not immediately available.
The zoo posted just before 7:45 p.m. Tuesday on its Facebook page, “We are thrilled to announce the two missing tortoises have been safely recovered by local law enforcement and are on their way back home to the Zoo!
“More information will be shared soon by the Indiana State Police.”
These tortoises – an Egyptian tortoise and a Northern Spider tortoise – calls the zoo’s Deserts exhibit their home. Investigators believe the theft happened sometime between 10 a.m. Oct. 11 and 10 a.m. Oct. 12.
The stolen reptiles both have microchips and are considered “critically endangered species.” The Egyptian tortoise has a “prominent scar” on its belly, police noted.
