Two new wildfires have emerged in Lincoln County as firefighters continue to fight blazes in eastern Nevada.
The Dry Canyon Fire and Parsnip Peak Fire, near Spring Valley State Park in Pioche, were reported Friday, the Bureau of Land Management said in a Saturday release.
“Both incidents are burning in timber and brush under critical fire weather conditions,” the release said.
The Dry Canyon Fire, located approximately 14 miles east of Pioche, is estimated at 1,500 acres. The Parsnip Peak Fire, 18 miles northwest of Pioche, is estimated at 300 acres.
Forecast winds are expected to push both fires north, while the Parsnip Peak Fire is also spreading east, the release said.
The two new fires arrive after the Grapevine Fire and Kane Springs Fire have burned for 10 days south of Caliente, located 140 miles northeast of Las Vegas.
The Kane Springs Fire, estimated at 17,042 acres, was at 50 percent contained as of Saturday. The Grapevine Fire is estimated at 26,203 acres and remains at zero percent containment, according to Nevada Incident Management Team 4.
A red flag warning remains in effect as critical fire weather is expected to develop in the area through Saturday night. High 25 mph winds and gusts up to 40 mph may produce low visibility due to ash and dust in the air and spur fire growth where fuels are available, NIMT4 said in a release.
More closures
Eagle Valley Resevoir at Spring Valley State Park was closed for boating activity Saturday due to fire supression activities.
The closure follows the BLM’s decision to close Beaver Dam State Park.
“Residents and visitors are urged to avoid activities that could ignite a wildfire while the Red Flag Warning remains in effect. This includes burning, recreational shooting, and any activity that may produce sparks,” the BLM release said.
Motorist were urged to maintain proper tire pressure — as blown tires can expose wheel rims that create sparks — secure trailer safety chains to prevent dragging and avoid parking or driving vehicles in dry grass or brush.
