RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Mateo Madina and Chardazha Alston, both 23, are being held on a $50,000 bond after they were accused of assaulting a woman and stealing her car with two children inside late Thursday night.

They are facing kidnapping, carjacking and several more charges. 

Children found in Raleigh after New Bern Avenue carjacking, suspects arrested: Police

An 11-year-old and a 4-year-old were found after the reported carjacking on New Bern Avenue, according to the Raleigh Police Department. Officers responded and found the car around 10 p.m. in the parking lot of a Food Lion on New Bern Avenue.

Officers said the incident stemmed from a domestic violence situation in which three people were going to the grocery store. At a certain point, a violent interaction transpired and that’s when police said the car, a Mazda, was stolen.

On Friday, CBS 17 found out the victim is the mother of Madina. She suffered minor injuries as a result of the incident, according to officers. Emergency responders took her to the hospital for treatment.

Officers said the victim’s 11-year-old daughter with autism and one of the suspect’s 4-year-old child were in the car when the suspects fled in the stolen vehicle.

“A short time later, the victim’s vehicle was located,” officers said. “The suspects were then arrested. The children were located unharmed.”

Lieutenant David Davis from the Raleigh Police Department stresses this is an isolated and domestic crime, and there is no further harm to the public. He adds the department is investigating what led up to the argument.

Both Alston and Madina are expected to return to court on August 28th.
