2 charged with assaulting man accused of killing Kimber Mills in bonfire shooting

Two people have been charged with assaulting the 27-year-old man who is accused of killing a high school cheerleader at a party in the woods.

Hunter McCulloch, 19, and Silas McCay, 21, were booked on third degree assault at the Jefferson County Jail on Thursday and are each being held on $6,000 bond, according to the booking log.

They are charged with the assault on Steven Tyler Whitehead, 27.

Whitehead was charged with four counts of attempted murder after the shooting. One of those charges was upgraded to murder following 18-year-old Kimber Mill’s death.

Mills died after being shot at a party and bonfire in the Jefferson County woods on October 18.

McCay was among those injured in the shooting.

Levi Sanders, 18, and 20-year-old Raelen Norris were also transported to a hospital by a personal vehicle. A juvenile was also grazed in the gunfire.

Whitehead, a national guardsman, had been held without bond since his arrest.

The shooting happened shortly before 1 a.m. that Sunday at The Pit, officials said, is a clearing in a wooded area where people – mostly ages 18-22 – gather for bonfires and maybe some drinking.

An investigator said there were about 40 to 50 people at the party that night. The party began about 8 p.m. Saturday, and the shooting happened at 12:20 a.m. Sunday.

Video showed a group of people assaulting Whitehead after he placed his hand around a girl’s hip and she pushed him, a detective has testified.

The video, a detective testified, showed that Whitehead was punched several times and then the person on top of Whitehead was separated from him.

Whitehead could then be seen pulling a gunfire before firing multiple times.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information is available.
