APEX, N.C. (WNCN) — Emergency crews have cleared the scene of a messy crash that caused heavy delays at the Triangle Expressway as the Thursday morning commute ended.
According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, all lanes on N.C. Highway 540 were closed where the crash took place around 9 a.m. Thursday.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol told CBS 17 that the 18-wheeler was carrying sand overturned and spilled sand all over the highway.

Troopers said the driver was injured in the crash and taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Troopers are still actively investigating what caused the crash.
