CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WOWK) – It’s time once again for the crew at WOWK to trade in our microphones and cameras for hammers and drills for Nexstar’s annual Founder’s Day of Caring.
13 News is partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Kanawha and Putnam County and the ReStore on June 20, 2025, to give back to our community. You’ll see 13 News journalists and employees at the Charleston ReStore and the Teays Valley ReStore. Our volunteers will also be in North Charleston helping to restore a home.
“Nexstar and WOWK are committed to making our communities better,” Sean Banks, WOWK-TV vice president and general manager, said. “Nexstar’s annual Founder’s Day of Caring allows our employees at WOWK to volunteer their time with important projects. It’s been an honor to work with Habitat for Humanity again for this year’s build.”
A Day in the Life with Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity is known for building affordable homes for those in need through its housing program, which means donations at their local ReStores are key to helping fund their mission.
The nonprofit gives eligible candidates the opportunity to buy and own their homes through the educational programs it has available. These programs teach home maintenance, financial literacy and more to interested parties.
Nexstar Media, Inc., was founded on June 17, 1996, and through our coverage, our employees have witnessed how local nonprofits and public service agencies impact communities through their everyday work and how they mobilize in times of crisis to help those in need.
On the company’s 20th anniversary in 2016, Nexstar Chairman and CEO Perry A. Sook established he “Founder’s Day of Caring,” when employees across all Nexstar Markets are given paid time off to volunteer with local nonprofits and public service agencies in our communities.
“We are a local service business and the best thing we can do to celebrate our success is to give back to the communities that made us successful. That’s the whole intent for Founder’s Day and that’s what we’re all about,” Sook said.
