PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — It started with a simple Facebook message.
Jordan LeFort, a second-grade teacher at St. Cecilia School in Pawtucket, reached out to 12 News anchor Shannon Hegy with a video explaining a new project her students were working on.
“My 2nd grade class has started doing a ‘Friday News Report’ because I thought it would be a great idea for my students to work on their social skills and to build up their confidence,” LeFort wrote. “They are so excited every week to do interviews and report on what’s happening in the school. They love their school and want everyone to know how much they love their school!”
LeFort asked Shannon if she might be able to surprise the kids so they could meet a real news anchor in person. For Shannon, it was a no-brainer, especially after she watched the adorable video of student reporter Fiona interviewing a tortoise, the new 6th-grade class pet.
That’s why on Wednesday, when St. Cecilia’s principal asked LeFort’s class to give their newest student a warm welcome, Shannon was met with shocked silence — then, excited squeals.
Shannon sat down with the students to answer their questions about live shots, breaking news and interviews, took pictures with the class, and even joined Fiona for an interview for the next “Friday News Report.”
“Who knows?” Shannon pointed out. “Maybe these kids are the next generation of 12 News journalists!”
