EuroMillions winner dies after suspected hit-and-run in Essex | Essex

A lottery winner has died after a suspected hit-and-run in Essex, police said.

Officers were called to the collision between a cyclist and a black Ford Ka in Tiptree at 6.30am on 21 May. The cyclist, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital where he died four days later, Essex police said.

He is understood to be Anthony Canty, a key worker who helped save the life of a police officer who had a heart attack during the first Covid-19 lockdown. Weeks later, in May 2020, Canty won £1m in a EuroMillions draw.

An 18-year-old man was initially arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink or drugs and failing to stop, the force added.

He remains under investigation and inquiries continue.

The suspect allegedly fled the scene in Maldon Road after the incident while Canty was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

In April 2020, Canty gave the officer CPR after he collapsed while they were on a bus. The officer was airlifted to hospital and spent five days in intensive care.

Canty said at the time that he stayed in touch with the officer’s partner while he was in hospital, dropped off fruit and flowers, and kept in contact after he recovered.

The water supply worker, from Maldon, won the EuroMillions prize with his partner Katie Sullivan. Canty had vowed not to give up his day job.

Police said they would like to hear from anyone who saw or has footage of a black Ford Ka car being driven in the area around the time of the collision on 21 May.

Anyone with information, CCTV, dashcam or other footage has been encouraged to contact Essex police.
