Democrats regain control of U.S. House of Representatives in midterm elections

AKIPRESS.COM –

The Democratic Party has won back control of the U.S. House of Representatives following Tuesday’s midterm elections, American news organizations projected.

Democrats secured the majority in the 435-seat lower chamber of Congress, where 218 seats are required to hold power. Projections indicate Democrats have secured at least 220 seats compared to 126 for Republicans as vote counts continue.

Heading into the midterms, Republicans held 219 seats, including one independent caucus member, while Democrats held 214 seats, alongside two vacancies.Under those conditions, Democrats needed a net gain of just three seats to flip control of the chamber.

Democrats achieved key victories by flipping several Republican-held districts in states including North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Colorado. In North Carolina, Democrats picked up a seat in a district that had been represented by Republicans for more than 15 years.

U.S. midterm elections occur halfway through a presidential term. All 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats were up for election, while President Donald Trump was not on the ballot.

Reclaiming the House majority allows Democrats to assume leadership of key House committees, launch congressional investigations, and increase oversight of the executive branch. The shift also poses a significant hurdle for Republicans attempting to advance legislative priorities through Congress.

The House of Representatives is the lower chamber of the U.S. Congress, comprised of 435 members elected to two-year terms. It is responsible for passing federal legislation, approving government spending and budgets, and conducting oversight of the presidential administration, while also retaining the sole power to initiate impeachment proceedings. Together with the Senate, it constitutes the U.S. Congress
