AKIPRESS.COM – More than 2,200 people have died as a result of an earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan over the weekend, Al Arabiya reported, citing Deputy Government Spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat.
The 6.0-magnitude earthquake occurred on the night of September 1, followed by two aftershocks with magnitudes of 5.2 and 4.7. The U.S. Geological Survey identified the epicenter of the earthquake and aftershocks as an area near the city of Jalalabad in Kunar.
The epicenter was located approximately 27 km east of the city, with a focal depth of about 8 km.
According to the latest data, 2,217 people have died and nearly 4,000 are injured. Rescue operations are ongoing. Al Jazeera reports that many people are trapped in isolated areas inaccessible to humanitarian aid.
The earthquake is the most powerful in Afghanistan in two years. According to the UN, a powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake in October 2023 in the west of the country killed about 1,500 people and injured another 2,000.
