A tornado struck a construction site in Turkey’s southern province of Antalya late Monday, killing four workers and injuring another after tearing apart two containers used as living quarters, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency.
The tornado hit the construction site in Antalya’s Kepez district around 11 p.m., destroying the two containers and hurling the five workers in the containers outside.
Two workers died at the scene, while two others died after being taken to the hospital. The fifth worker sustained minor injuries and was reported to be in good condition.
Emergency medical personnel, police and firefighters were dispatched to the site following the incident.
Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin, who inspected the site, said the tornado also toppled a crane but that the collapse had not caused any deaths or injuries.
“We are facing a very unusual natural phenomenon because there have been no reports of storms or tornadoes anywhere else in the city. There is no damage to the surrounding buildings, but we have a tornado that destroyed two containers in this particular area,” Şahin told reporters.
The tornado struck after the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM) issued a warning Sunday of heavy rainfall and possible tornadoes in Antalya on Monday. The agency issued another warning Monday afternoon for severe weather expected Tuesday, cautioning residents about possible flash floods, strong winds and tornadoes.
