Hurricane Melissa Leaves Trail Of Destruction Across Jamaica, Haiti, And Cuba

Jamaica has begun recovery efforts after the catastrophic Category 5 Hurricane Melissa tore through the island, while Cuba and Haiti are facing mounting devastation and increased loss of life across the region.

The preliminary death toll has climbed to over 30, with eight in Jamaica, 23 in Haiti, and one in the Dominican Republic.

CDEMA Executive Director Elizabeth Riley said the regional response plan has been activated, including the restoration of telecommunications, the activation of the regional coordination centre, and the deployment of a French vessel docked in Barbados with relief supplies to assist Jamaica.

Jamaican officials described widespread damage to homes, hospitals, and infrastructure, with more than three-quarters of the island still without power.

Cuba’s President, Miguel Díaz-Canel, reported “considerable damage and flooding,” though early preparations helped limit casualties.

In Haiti, floodwaters have displaced thousands, destroyed coastal homes, and left at least 12 children among the dead, with more residents still missing.
