With hearts full of gratitude and a legacy built over 25 years, the Canaan/Bon Accord Branch of the Diabetes Association of Trinidad and Tobago marked a milestone of advocacy and community care, honouring those who have walked the journey with them.

Beneath the warm lights of the Canaan Community Centre on Saturday night, an elegant awards ceremony unfolded in tribute to dedication, service and enduring impact.

According to THA Secretary of Health and Wellness Dr Faith Brebnor, diabetes continues to be one of the top health challenges in Tobago.

“Although it is that common though, it should never be accepted as we have to live with it and we have to keep it that way. Education, early intervention and proper self-management remain the things that are necessary.”

It is for this reason that Dr Brebnor endorsed the work of the Canaan/Bon Accord Branch of the Diabetes Association over the past 25 years.

She noted that evidence of their work making an impact is clear, especially in areas such as foot care.

“Tobago and Trinidad and Tobago, at a point in time, is leading in amputations in the region, and because of the work that you have put in, we are seeing a reversal in those trends.”

The Canaan/Bon Accord Branch hopes to continue its advocacy to minimise the risk of Tobagonians being afflicted with diabetes.
