Businessman Balliram Maharaj: Secure The Nation’s Food Supply

As the government prepares the national budget, businessman and former head of the Supermarket Association, Arima Mayor Balliram Maharaj, is calling for urgent action to secure the nation’s food supply and foreign exchange stability. In an open letter titled “Bali’s Wishes, Part One,” Mr. Maharaj warns that the shortage of foreign exchange is quietly threatening Trinidad and Tobago’s ability to feed itself.

He notes that nearly 80 percent of the foods we consume—including rice, flour, oil, milk, and meats—depend on imports, and local importers have faced delays of up to three months in getting foreign currency. Mr. Maharaj is calling for a Food Import Support Facility, and for government to prioritize foreign exchange for importers of essential goods.

The Arima Mayor says real progress lies in partnerships that strengthen food security, reduce dependency on the U.S. dollar, and protect families from hardship.
