Youth in Union Brings Hope and Opportunity to Tonga’s Young Rugby Players

The group paid a courtesy call to Lord Fakatulolo, Governor of Vava’u, with Tupou presenting a signed Wallabies jersey as a gesture of appreciation. They then hosted clinics at Hunga Primary School, Ofu Primary School, and Mailefihi College Rugby Field, engaging boys and girls from regional schools. Each session included the donation of rugby balls, jerseys, and training equipment to strengthen local programmes and encourage wider participation in sport.

A standout contribution came from Charlie Sommers, a South Australian teenager who spent more than a year collecting rugby gear to donate to Tongan schools and clubs—a personal mission that perfectly captured the spirit of Youth in Union.

Reflecting on the tour, McCaffrey said the experience reaffirmed why the initiative continues to grow. “Every year we’re reminded how special this connection is,” he said. “The smiles, the passion, and the energy here in Tonga show what sport can do—it brings people together and gives young people the confidence to chase their dreams.”

Supported by the Australian Government through PacificAus Sports and Rugby Australia, the Youth in Unionprogram continues to deepen ties between Australia and Tonga through shared values and community spirit.

Daniel Millis, Rugby Australia’s Head of Pacific Partnerships, said the initiative demonstrates how rugby can build lasting bonds. “Rugby connects us beyond the field,” he said. “This program builds respect, strengthens relationships, and celebrates the deep bond that unites Australia and Tonga.”

As the 2025 tour comes to an end, Youth in Union stands as a testament to the power of sport to transform lives—creating pathways for Pacific youth to grow stronger, healthier, and more united, both on and off the field.
