Three arrested in separate Police drug and firearms operations

Tonga Police have arrested three men in two separate operations targeting the distribution of illicit drugs and the unlawful possession of firearms, as authorities intensify efforts to curb organised criminal activity.

In a statement, police said a 35-year-old man from Kolonga was apprehended on 27 February after officers observed him allegedly distributing drugs in the Tatakamotonga area. When approached, the suspect fled on foot but was quickly pursued and arrested.

During the same operation, a 39-year-old man from Ma’ufanga was also detained. Both men have been charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug-related utensils.

In a separate operation on 28 February, police arrested a 32-year-old man from Houma following intelligence reports linking him to the distribution of illicit drugs. Officers executed a planned operation that resulted in the seizure of firearms, ammunition, drug paraphernalia and a quantity of cash believed to be connected to illegal activity.

The Houma man has been formally charged with possession of drug-related utensils, possession of firearms without a licence, and possession of ammunition without a licence.

Police confirmed that all exhibits from both operations have been seized and investigations remain ongoing.

Tonga has in recent years faced growing concern over methamphetamine trafficking and the circulation of illegal firearms.

Authorities say community cooperation remains critical, urging members of the public to report suspicious activity as efforts continue to address drug-related harm and protect public safety.
