The Tonga Commonwealth Games Association has announced netball captain Hulita Veve and swimmer Finau Ohuafi as Team Tonga’s flag and baton bearers for the opening ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The pair will lead the Tongan delegation into the OVO Hydro Arena on 23 July, carrying the nation’s colours at one of the largest multi-sport events in the Commonwealth.
TASANOC said the selections recognise the athletes’ leadership, dedication and commitment to representing Tonga on the international stage.
Veve, captain of the national netball team, the Tala, has been chosen as flag bearer after years of service to Tongan netball. Officials said she has consistently demonstrated teamwork, resilience and national pride throughout her sporting career.
Ohuafi, who will serve as baton bearer, has emerged as one of Tonga’s leading swimmers. Beginning his sporting journey in Popua, he has progressed through regional and international competitions and is regarded as a role model for young athletes.
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will mark a new chapter for the event, with a streamlined programme following the successful Birmingham Games in 2022. Athletes from across the Commonwealth are expected to compete in a range of sports, providing smaller nations such as Tonga with an important opportunity to showcase talent on the world stage.
In a statement, TASANOC congratulated both athletes and wished all Team Tonga members success as preparations continue for Glasgow.
The final Team Tonga delegation for Glasgow 2026 is expected to be announced in the coming weeks as athletes complete their preparations for the Games.
