Second written nomination for Prime Minister-Designate confirmed

The Office of the Interim Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga has confirmed receipt of a second written nomination for the position of Prime Minister-Designate.

The nomination was submitted yesterday as the Assembly prepares to select a new head of government.

Under the process overseen by Lord Tangi ‘o Vaonukonuka, nominations will remain open until 4.30 pm on Friday, 12 December. All submitted names will only be formally revealed at a meeting of the Assembly, when MPs convene to elect the Prime Minister-Designate.

The election follows last month’s general election, in which all 26 elected seats were filled under the kingdom’s constitutional arrangements. Once the nomination window closes, the Assembly will convene, likely on 15 December, to vote on the candidate list via secret ballot.

The successful candidate, confirmed by the Assembly, will then be formally submitted to King Tupou VI for appointment. Until that time, political uncertainty continues, highlighting the significance of the upcoming vote for Tonga’s governance and stability.
