Tonga Police have confirmed that one of the three prisoners who escaped from police custody has been recaptured, while officers continue searching for the remaining two escapees.

In an update issued on Tuesday, police said Angelico Fa’aoa was successfully apprehended and has been returned to police custody.

The search remains under way for the two outstanding escapees: Liuaki Fungalei Kokohu VI, also known as Michael Tama, a New Zealand national, and Adam Zabid Hussein, who is the holder of a Fijian passport.

Police have previously described Kokohu as the highest-risk escapee because of his criminal history and the seriousness of the offences associated with him. Members of the public are strongly advised not to approach either man if they are seen.

Instead, police are urging anyone with information about their whereabouts to immediately call the emergency number 922 or contact the police station nearest to the sighting.

Authorities also reminded the public that knowingly assisting, harbouring, concealing or providing any form of aid to escaped prisoners is a criminal offence under Tongan law.

Tonga Police thanked the public for its continued support and cooperation, saying community assistance remains vital as officers work to locate the remaining fugitives.

The circumstances surrounding the escape have not been disclosed, and police have not released further details about the ongoing investigation.

Anyone with information that could assist the search is urged to contact Tonga Police immediately rather than attempting to intervene themselves.
