Govt issues fuel storage warning amid energy concerns

Authorities in Nukuʻalofa have issued a public safety warning following a reported increase in fuel stockpiling, as concerns over a global energy crisis begin to affect Tonga.

Tonga Fire and Emergency Services said it had observed more households and businesses storing petrol in large drums and containers. The advisory follows recent government briefings addressing fuel supply pressures linked to global market instability.

Officials warned that petrol is highly flammable and improper storage significantly raises the risk of fires, explosions, and serious injury. Under Tonga’s Petroleum Regulations, it is illegal to store fuel beyond set limits without a licence and approved facilities.

The rules allow no more than four gallons of petrol inside homes. Up to 20 gallons may be kept in garages or outbuildings, provided they are at least 10 feet from other structures. Larger quantities require strict licensing and safety compliance.

Fire authorities urged the public not to store petrol in bulk containers or near kitchens, electrical equipment, or open flames. Approved containers should be used at all times, with fuel kept away from children and heat sources.

“Improper fuel storage endangers not only individual households but entire communities,” the department said in a statement, calling for cooperation and vigilance.

The agency said it would continue working with relevant authorities to monitor compliance and enforce regulations. Residents are also encouraged to report unsafe practices.

The advisory highlights growing local impacts of global energy pressures, with safety risks emerging alongside supply concerns.
