Drones create healthcare lifeline in China’s remote Hainan mountains

Drones are transforming healthcare access in the mountainous areas of China’s Hainan province, cutting medical delivery times in half and helping remote communities receive faster diagnoses and treatment.

A new low-altitude medical logistics network in Qiongzhong Li and Miao Autonomous County now links all 15 township clinics through four drone routes covering 205 kilometres, according to Chinese state media reports. The system transports blood samples, emergency medicines and medical supplies between isolated villages and county hospitals.

The project has become particularly important in Hainan’s central mountain region, where rugged terrain and winding roads have long delayed access to healthcare. Mountains and hills make up about 80 per cent of Qiongzhong county, often forcing patients or medical workers to travel for hours to deliver samples for testing.

One resident, Cheng Chuanhe from Sihe village, reportedly avoided a lengthy trip after local clinic staff used a drone service to send his blood sample to a county hospital. Test results were returned within hours through a provincial digital health platform.

The drone network began operating in 2025 and has completed more than 225 flights covering over 2,200 kilometres. Operators say the system has already been used for infectious disease testing, emergency medicine transport and routine laboratory deliveries.

The development reflects broader efforts across Asia to use drone technology in remote healthcare, particularly in areas vulnerable to isolation during disasters or poor weather conditions. Similar trials have recently been reported in rural Taiwan.
