Deputy Prime Minister Hon Dr Taniela Fusimalohi addressed a gathering of Pacific leaders, investors and firms at the Pacific Infrastructure Conference in Brisbane last week. He emphasised Tonga’s commitment to infrastructure development and regional collaboration.
In his keynote, Dr Fusimalohi stressed the need for upgraded roads, resilient communications systems and enhanced climate-adaptation infrastructure to bolster Tonga’s long-term growth.
As Minister for Infrastructure and other key portfolios, including energy, environment, communications and climate change, he emphasised the integration of sustainable technologies in national projects.
Australia has pledged more than AUD100 million in infrastructure support for Tonga. Australia’s funding targets include an upgraded international wharf, a second undersea telecommunications cable, renewable energy systems, a new parliament house, and renovations to hospitals, clinics and schools.
Tonga is also exploring options to lease or purchase land for a new consular site in Canberra, reflecting its expanding diplomatic outreach.
These remarks align with his broader reform agenda, which includes managing government spending, public sector adjustments and boosting economic efficiency.
