The China Aid Agricultural Technical Assistance Project Phase VII, together with Tonga’s Livestock Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Forests, organised a comprehensive technical session on layer breeding. The training combined theoretical classes with live demonstrations.
Trainees visited the Livestock Division’s Chick Hatching Center, where they learned about chick hatching and brooding management, before being given chicks to take back. The move is intended to cement learning and support participants in applying new techniques.

Officials say the scheme aims to breathe new life into Tonga’s layer farming sector by equipping farmers with better knowledge and practical skills. Past phases of China-Tonga agro-tech cooperation have already helped modernise poultry and other livestock practices.
China’s Ambassador Liu Weimin emphasised that “food security is a national priority” and affirmed that agriculture remains a key sector for Tonga’s development.
By combining theory with practice and distributing chicks, the Phase VII project hopes the local layer farming industry will become more productive and sustainable in the long term.
